Reading comprehension is the act of understanding what you are reading. While the definition can be simply stated the act is not simple to teach, learn or practice. Reading comprehension is an intentional, active, interactive process that occurs before, during, and after a person reads a particular piece of writing.
Reading comprehension is one of the pillars of the act of reading. When a person reads a text he engages in a complex array of cognitive processes two elements make up the process of reading comprehension: vocabulary knowledge and text comprehension. To understand a text the reader must be able to comprehend the vocabulary used in the piece of writing.
How does reading comprehension develop?
As you can see, reading comprehension is incredibly complex and multifaceted. Because of this, readers do not develop the ability to comprehend texts quickly, easily, or independently. Reading comprehension strategies must be refined, practiced, and reinforced continually throughout life. Content area materials such as textbooks and newspapers, magazines, and journal articles pose different reading comprehension challenges for young people and thus require different comprehension strategies.
Why is reading comprehension so important?
Reading comprehension is a critical component of functional literacy. Without comprehension, reading is nothing more than tracking symbols on a page with your eyes and sounding them out. Imagine being handed a story written in Egyptian hieroglyphics with no understanding of its meaning.
Pre Reading Activity
Ask the students the following questions:
1. What do we mean when we say that someone has good manners?
2. What do we mean when we say that someone has bad manners?
3. What will happen if everyone behaves in a good manner?
4. What will happen if everyone behaves in a bad manner?
5. Read the statements in the following bubbles and draw a smiling
face if it is good manners, and a sad face if it is bad
manners.
Problems and Solutions
Students’ Magazine | Excerpt From The Book
Dear Big Brother,
Unhappy Zain Grade VI
I am the only grandson of my
grandparents. Though they love me
a lot but one thing upsets me;
whenever they come to visit us, they
always tell my parents that I am an
ill-mannered child. I never talk to
them in a harsh way or misbehave,
so I don’t know why they say this.
Please, guide me on how to treat
them so that they feel happy.
Dear Zain,
I am sure you respect your
grandparents, but older people
always expect something more.
Here are some valuable tips; if you
follow these you’ll probably make
them very happy:
Dear Big Brother,
Disturbed Ahsan Grade IX
I am short in height and I travel in a
public bus daily. My problem is that,
though, I always pay my fare while
I am mostly asked to give up my
seat for other people. Since I pay
my fare, it is my right to get a proper
seat. Moreover, whenever the
the conductor asks me to stand up, my
friends make fun of me and I get
annoyed.
Please tell me what to do.
Dear Ahsan,
It is good that you are an honest boy
and you pay your fare. I think you
are very lucky to be asked to give up
your seat for an adult, especially for
an old or handicapped person, or a
the person carrying something heavy.
While Reading Activity
You need to understand that it is not your skin color, your height, or any
other physical appearance that makes you a better or more likable person.
What matters most is your cleanliness and your behavior. Always have well-combed hair, clean clothes, and clean shoes. Also learn to forgive, respect, and lend a helping hand: and do not backbite or make fun of others. Everyone
will love you and will want to be your friend.
