About Lesson
Math Lab Activity
– To make the following shapes using a pair of set squares.
(i) square (ii) rectangle (iii) parallelogram (iv) rhombus
(v) trapezium.
Objective:
Handling set squares.
Material Needed:
- Two pairs of set squares, pencil and paper.
Procedure:
(i) Making a square shape.
- Take two 45o -45o -90o set squares and place them on a paper such that their longest-
edges completely touch each other. [Fig. 6(a)] - Now mark the boundary of the shape by moving a pencil around the outer edges of the
set squares [Fig. 6(b)]. - See carefully the shape formed. It is a square.
(ii) Making a rectangle
- Take two 30o-60o-90o set squares and repeat the Steps 1, 2 and 3 mentioned above.
- Observe the shape formed. [Fig. 6(b) and 6(d)]
(iii) Making a parallelogram
- Take two 45o-45o -90o or 30o-60o-90o set squares.
- Place them such that 90o corner of the one set square is in contact with 45o corner of the other set square. [Fig 6(e)]
- Mark the boundary and observe the shape formed. [Fig. 6(f)]
(iv) Making a rhombus
- Take two 30o-60°-90o set squares and place them to make an equilateral triangle [Fig. 6(g)].
- Make another equilateral triangle with same base by the same process opposite to first triangle as in [Fig. 6(h)].
- Mark the boundary and observe the shape so formed [Fig6(i)].
(v) Making a trapezium.
- Make a rectangle using two identical set squares.
- Now place one more set squares of the shape size in contact with one side of the rectangle obtained [Fig. 6(j)].
- Mark the boundary and identify the four sided shape so formed. [Fig. 6(k)]
