About Lesson
Math Lab Activity
Β
– How many times will my birthday fall on a Saturday in 20 years?
Β
Objectives:
- Students will be able to use HCF and LCM to solve a real-world problem.
- Students will be able to apply their understanding of days of the week to calculate a frequency.
Β
Materials:
- Paper
- Pencil
Instructions:
- Find the HCF of 20 and 7.
- Divide 20 by the HCF you found. This number represents the number of complete weeks in 20 years.
- Multiply the number of complete weeks by 7. This number represents the number of Saturdays in 20 years.
- If you were born on a leap year, add one to the number of Saturdays you calculated in step 3.
- Subtract the number of days between your birthday and the next Saturday from the number of Saturdays you calculated in step 4. This number represents the number of Saturdays in 20 years that your birthday falls on.
Β
Example:
- Your birthday is on a Saturday.
- You were born on a leap year.
- HCF of 20 and 7 = 7
- 20 / 7 = 2 complete weeks
- 2 * 7 = 14 Saturdays
- 14 Saturdays + 1 (leap year) = 15 Saturdays
- 15 Saturdays – 0 (days between Saturday and next Saturday) = 15 Saturdays
Β
Conclusion:
Your birthday will fall on a Saturday 15 times in 20 years.
Β
Challenge:
Try to find a way to generalize this solution so that it can be used for any birthday and any number of years.
