What Is the Cloze Procedure?
The cloze procedure is commonly used in language classes, and many students will recall learning new words through cloze reading. Even in classes with native speakers, teachers will often adopt the cloze procedure to expand their pupils’ vocabulary. So, what is cloze reading?
In a cloze reading exercise, an instructor prepares a selection of sentences that have some words deleted. Students must then fill in the blanks with the appropriate term. Often, they are aided in this by a word bank. A cloze reading exercise might look like this:
Maria had a long list of (blank) to complete on Monday. First, she went to the (blank) to withdraw money with her debit card. Then, she drove to the (blank), where she bought groceries for the week. After that, she had to (blank) to the post office and send a letter to her grandma. She stopped for a moment to recharge and grab a quick (blank). Finally, she returned (blank). Maria sighed.
